WHAT TO KNOW: The Jackrabbits are pursuing their fifth consecutive trip to the FCS semifinals in what's their first-ever regular season rematch with a non-conference foe, while UIW returns to Brookings on a 10-game winning streak. The Cardinals are hoping to make their second trip to the semifinals. They made it in 2022, where they narrowly
SDSU's win over the Cardinals on Sept. 7 was one of the bigger early-season games in the FCS, and UIW was within a score in the fourth quarter thanks largely to their high-powered passing game. Zach Calzada has thrown for over 3,500 yards with 35 touchdowns and just eight interceptions, and has two top-end targets to throw to in Jalen Walthall and Roy Alexander. Walthall has 76 catches for 1,224 yards and 14 touchdowns while Alexander has 87 catches for 1,016 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Calzada, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound grad student, is a dangerous two-way threat with a possible NFL future. He previously played at Auburn and Texas A&M, and with the Aggies in 2021 threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns in a win over No. 1 Alabama.
In the September loss to SDSU in Brookings, Calzada was 31-of-39 for 351 yards and three touchdowns, by far the most production any quarterback has had against SDSU this year.
The Cardinal defense allowed 20 points or more in each of their last five games of the regular season, but, aided by rainy weather, held Villanova to 138 yards of offense in their quarterfinal win.
UIW has 38 sacks in 13 games, led by Devin Grant (8.5) and Dune Smith and John Mathis (six each). Mason Chambers had 81 tackles and three interceptions, while Mister Williams (75 tackles, five forced fumbles) and Darius Sanders (73 tackles, three interceptions) have also made an impact.
SDSU comes in on a six-game winning streak, averaging 36.5 points on offense and 12.9 allowed on defense.
Amar Johnson (1,013 yards, 13 touchdowns), Mark Gronowski (2,341 yards, 19 touchdown passes) and Griffin Wilde (63 catches, 1,014 yards, 10 touchdowns) have been the top playmakers when the Jacks have the ball, while the defense has been led by linebackers Adam Bock (83 tackles, three sacks, two interceptions), Caleb Francl (67 tackles) and Graham Spalding (58 tackles).
