Levinson seeks commissioners' support for ACUA following landfill odor controversy

County Executive Dennis Levinson wants the Board of Commissioners to pass a resolution supporting the Atlantic County Utilities Authority after Republicans criticized the agency before the election over the odors coming from its landfill.

Levinson sent the commissioners a letter Monday saying he is "particularly concerned about the questions and doubts in the minds of the 308 employees of the Atlantic County Utilities Authority following the press conference that called for the dissolution or privatization of the their employer."

He suggested the board assure them their jobs are secure by passing a resolution of support for the ACUA at their Tuesday afternoon meeting.

There is no such resolution on the agenda listed on the commissioners' website, but resolutions are sometimes added to the agenda at the meeting.

State Sen. Vince Polistina, R-Atlantic, said at an Oct. 30 news conference at the Egg Harbor Township landfill that ongoing odor problems are ruining the quality of life for Absecon residents and others downwind of the facility and must be fixed, even if it means dissolving the ACUA and privatizing landfill management.

ACUA landfill odor has GOP calling for privatization; Dems want different solution

Landfill odor problems ruining the quality of life for Absecon residents and others must be fixed, even if it means dissolving the Atlantic County Utilities Authority and privatizing solid waste management, state Sen. Vince Polistina, R-Atlantic, said during a Wednesday news conference.

Also attending were Commission Chair Maureen Kern, a Republican who was running for reelection and won, but who was being attacked during the campaign over the odor problem by her opponent Joanne Famularo, of Pleasantville.

Commissioners John Risley, Andrew Parker, Richard Dase and June Byrnes also attended the news conference.

"It is difficult enough to attract and retain qualified employees without this added complication," Levinson wrote. "A resolution of support for the ACUA and its employees is in order and should be presented at your December 17 meeting prior to the holidays and in the presence of ACUA President Matt DeNafo who will be there to make his own budget presentation."

DeNafo was expected to present the authority's 2025 budget to the commissioners Tuesday afternoon.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
