Over the past year, more details on the upcoming Marvel Studios "Nova" series for Disney+ have been coming to light following confirmation by Marvel President Kevin Feige that the series is in development.
Nova, aka Richard Rider, is a member of the Nova Corps until the Annihilation Wave destroys them all, leaving him imbued with their combined power. Guided by the super-intelligent Worldmind computer, Richard Rider wages a one-man battle for justice as Nova.
Recently, while promoting the release of "Agatha All Along", Marvel's Brad Winderbaum revealed the new show will draw inspiration from two classic space-themed franchises.
The Nova that's being developed right now, it's an amazing ensemble piece. I shouldn't say too much, but it's like a great case of characters that's got shades of Star Trek , shades of Battlestar Galactica, but also has, it also feels like if you know those comics, you know how heated, let's say, that Richard Rider kind of world can get, and it certainly embraces all of that."
Deadline has revealed that the Disney+ series has made another major step forward in development, as Ed Bernero has joined the project as a writer and showrunner. Ed has previously worked as a showrunner on "Criminal Minds", "Third Watch" and "Crossing Lines".
Originally, Sabir Pirzada, who wrote the "Moon Knight" series was working on the "Nova" series, which has been in development for over two years.
Roger's Take: Since we've already seen the Nova Corps introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as they were a major part of the first "Guardians Of The Galaxy" movie, I've always thought it was more of a "when" rather than an "if", Nova would be introduced into the MCU.
It's also likely that the new"Nova" series is still going to be a few years away from being released on Disney+ since Marvel has drastically reduced the number of shows it is releasing to reduce costs and improve quality.
Ed's history generally seems to focus more on crime dramas, so I wonder if that's going to be an element in the new series or if Ed just wanted an opportunity to do something completely different after decades of making crime shows.
