Bird flu found in Sioux County,
Monona County flocks
Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI, or bird flu) has been detected in a Sioux County flock of approximately 429,000 egg-laying hens and a Monona County backyard poultry flock of 34 birds, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship announced Monday.
Another outbreak of the virus, in a flock of 30,000 turkeys in Worth County, was also disclosed Monday. The department does not identify impacted operators.
Because HPAI is highly lethal to birds, infected flocks are culled. The outbreak, which has waxed and waned over the past several years, has driven up the price of eggs significantly.
Bird flu outbreaks have hit Northwest Iowa poultry farms in swift succession over the last few weeks -- Sioux County alone has lost millions of hens to influenza. With the latest flocks added to the list, Iowa has had 11 poultry flocks fall victim to the virus this year. The virus has also been detected in cattle in Iowa, but with proper veterinary care cows are able to survive the infection.
